Despite being a little humid and a bit overcast the church congregation came together
for our annual Outdoor
Worship Service and Church Picnic. The service recognized God's desire to
take care of his people, especially when we are discouraged and stressed.
All of us have foods
that both nourish the body and the soul. Labeled “Comfort Foods,” they might be
defined as “the things we eat and drink when needing a sense of reward,
security, calm or reprieve from life’s circumstances. They’re things we enjoy
for their familiarity, simplicity or pleasant associations from past
enjoyment.” In 1 Kings 19 we
find the Prophet Elijah exhausted and stressed. He has been victorious in his
confrontation with the prophets of Baal however this victory has brought down
upon him the wrath of Queen Jezebel. Elijah is running for his life and ready
to simply give up and die. As God ministers to Elijah, the Lord sends an angel
who feeds the prophet fresh baked bread and cool soothing water, not once but
twice. Elijah is strengthened by the divinely delivered comfort food. All of
us will face periods of great stress, especially considering the world in which
we live and we could all use a bit of divine comfort. Too often we choose to
run through the drive through of a fast food joint purchasing meals that provide
little comfort but instead actually weaken our bodies with high concentrations
of fat and other unhealthy additives. We have all too often left behind the
tradition of a family gathering together around a common table and enjoying food
and fellowship that minister to the body and soul. On Sunday we enjoyed our
annual Outdoor Worship Service and Church Picnic as God once again cared for
us. The event was a great chance to reduce stress as we spent time in God’s
presence and feasted on delicious comfort foods provided by the church family.
Hopefully all of us find time to slow down, have a good meal and enjoy God’s
sustaining presence in our lives.
Following the Outdoor Worship Service and Picnic the congregation enjoyed a
grand time of visiting with once another as well as playing some games with the
kids.
