Pastor's Picks

Written by William Barclay

Published by Westminster John Knox Press

This is the best commentary on the Lord's Prayer that I have found. Barclay has compiled a great amount of history and cultural perspectives. He synthesizes the differing perspectives on difficult passages. He brings to his readers the thoughts of some of the best minds and materials available, such as the comments of Luther and others. He also gives his own very biblical minded perspective on the passage. He masterfully interweaves background and academic information with very practical applications. While being very scholarly Barclay writes with a very none academic style that makes the book very enjoyable for reading for the pastor, scholar or layperson. At 128 pages it is also a quick read. I would recommend this book for anyone with an interest in the Lord's Prayer or for anyone interested in knowing simply how to go about praying, or for someone who wanted to deepen their prayer life.

This is a wonderful little book. At 98 pages it is very quick read. It is a compilation of one page excepts of Wesley's writing on all different topics dealing with prayer. It could be read in an afternoon, or could be used as a daily devotional for 3-4 months. It offers a great amount of insight into how and why we are to pray. And at only $.99 it is an absolute steal. If you are interested in ordering a copy it is available from CBD.com for the above mentioned price.
